Rare 1950s Gold Lace Mermaid Swimsuit By DeWeese Designs
Stunning 1950s gold lace mermaid swimsuit by DeWeese Designs. Fab scallloped shell shaped cups, ruching through the body for shaping and a classic low cut leg. The fabric is gorgeous gold metallic lace with bright gold metallic piping on the cups. Even the strap fittings are luxe metallic gold. The suit is beautifully constructed with an inner shelf bra and boning at the sides of the bra for shaping. The cups are a classic 50s silhouette, the hard plastic mannequin doesn't do them full justice. The straps hook on in the front of the cups and are detachable for perfect tan lines. Back of the suit is entirely ruched for a flawless fit. Divine!
"Mary Ann DeWeese spent twelve years as head designer for Catalina, where she received world-wide acclaim as a designer.
She worked with top studio designers on suits for the stars and for many years designed the swimsuits worn in the Miss America pageant. She also worked with Schiaparelli. Mary Ann was credited with such innovations as texture use, including Jacquard knits and appliquéd stretch cottons. She also introduced “sweetheart” matching swimwear and sportswear for men and women.
Having reached peaked success with Catalina she decided to launch her own company in 1951, called “DeWeese Designs,” turning out high-fashion swimsuits and sundresses", according to The Vintage Fashion Guild site.
